Netflix is reportedly working on a new feature to crackdown password sharing. At the moment anyone is able to borrow a password from someone with an account and will then be able to stream movies and TV shows. This has negatively affected the streamer’s ability to score more subscribers and grow.
The new feature will prompt users to register their own account and if your account was wrongly flagged, Netflix asks you to verify the account with an e-mail or text code. The test involves showing a new screen to users who may be using another user’s account.
The screen reads: If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.
Netflix makes it clear in its terms that an account can only be shared with members of your household: “The Netflix service and any content viewed through our service are for your personal and non-commercial use only and may not be shared with individuals beyond your household.”
The streamer only limits simultaneous streaming but doesn’t limit the number of devices a single account can be logged into. It is not clear when the feature will roll out, so be sure to stay tuned for more.
